Mandurah APL Wrap

Mandurah APL South Perth Team

South Perth performed well at the inaugural Mandurah APL Cup last month, narrowly missing out on a quarter final berth.

Drawn against a strong Manning side in the opening round, Glenn, Scott and Neale went within a whisker of scoring a tie-break victory before losing 4-6, 12-2, 0-1.

It didn’t get any easier in the next round as South Perth ran into host club Mandurah who were led by a red-hot Robbie Tiller. Ashley, Scott and Glenn were able to fight out a 0-10, 4-1 and 1-0 victory.

Drawn against Osborne Park in a cash game during a fixtured competition bye, South Perth produced their best effort of the weekend. Jan, Ashley and Neale combined to register a comprehensive 8-0, 8-0 win.

Round four saw the Millers move to the indoor rink for the first time to face the undefeated Wanneroo side. Jan, Ashley and Scott found the opposition too strong, losing 6-8, 1-11.

A four-hour gap prior to their night fixture allowed the South Perth team to regroup for the must-win encounter with a strong Henselite team. Rising to the occasion, Glenn, Scott and Neale prevailed 5-4, 0-16, 1-0 over Noelene Abe, Lindsay Strange and Pieter Harris.

Starting day two with a 2-2 record, only victories in their remaining sectional games would give South Perth a chance of progressing to the knockout phase.

A straight sets victory over Vic Park-Carlisle (6-3,7-4) kept finals hopes alive but a final round loss to Middleton Beach (4-6,1-5) left South Perth with a record of three wins and three losses and a fourth place finish in their section.

Congratulations to Glenn Pauling, Ashley Sharp, Jan Miles, Neale Griffin and Scott Walker on your efforts in representing South Perth in a great event that will only get bigger next year.
