South Perth hosted the final round of fixtures for the inaugural Bowls WA Winter Pennant season on Sunday June 24.
Needing a clean sweep to unseat Bedford from fourth place, our side relished the familiar South Perth green and secured 5 ½ points to finish the season equal fourth.
Ray Pride, Klaire Hughes and Ken Pride had a solid win over the Gordon Gray skippered rink. The point was never really in doubt as Ken guided his side to a 19-11 victory.
Irene Groves, Lynne Palmer and Ray Miles were also impressive and pulled away late to record a 17-10 win having been down 9-8 with five ends to play.
On the TV rink things weren’t going quite so well for Bill Culverhouse, Andrew Roberts and Rod Clinch. After six ends they found themselves down 13-0.
Miraculously our boys fought back to lead 19-15 before settling for a 19-all draw.
The 5 ½ points saw us join Bedford in equal fourth place at the conclusion of the season but our inferior percentage saw us placed fifth.
The day was a great success, in part owing to the efforts of Kieran O’Brien, Nick Reagan, Perry Brown and Ross Bresland in setting up and preparing the BBQ lunch provided to all players.
All feedback I have received on the first season of Winter Pennants has been positive and so we look forward to suiting up again next winter.
Lastly thanks to all members who made themselves available for the eight-week season.
