2015 Australian Open Singles Sectional Report

Ten South Perth members contested the singles discipline at the 2015 Australian Bowls Open. Sectional play was started over Saturday, Sunday and Monday under mostly overcast conditions.
On Saturday, at host club Broadbeach, Danny Penman was drawn in a tough section which included 2009 NZ Singles Winner Richard Girvan. Danny received a walkover in his opening match before taking on the former NZ champion. In a tight contest Danny was narrowly defeated 21-18 and then played Stephen Milsted in his other sectional match, losing 21-13.
Greg Reagan (pictured) cruised through his section comfortably at Robina, winning all three games by double-figure margins. Greg got his campaign off to an emphatic start with a 21-3 victory over Andrew Growcott. He then followed that up by defeating Brian Knott 21-10 and Anthony Yogiyo 21-5 to progress to the knockout stage of the event.
Hugh Wylie was drawn in a difficult section at Mermaid Beach, which included 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Silver medallist Ryan Bester. To his credit Hugh managed to take seven shots off his well-credentialed opponent, but was unable to get going in his second match losing 21-2 to Max Joffray. Hugh's final match had no bearing on the outcome of the section and was not played.
Sunday saw four more players commence their carnivals including Adrian Durrant who was drawn at Paradise Point and received a walkover in his first match. In the second session he lost 16-21 to Daryl White before holding match twice in a narrow 19-21 defeat to Andrew Ransom.
Ryan Havercroft contested his section at Gold Coast but was defeated in all three games. He rallied from 10-20 to lose 17-21 to Jack Pater in his opening encounter. He rounded out his singles campaign with losses to Billy Ahoy 9-21 and Alan Hilton 7-21.
Scott Walker fared better at Mermaid Beach, winning all three games. After close encounters against Jason Smith (21-15) and Brett Bywater (21-18), Scott cemented his place in the knockout phase by defeating David Morison 21-9.
Joining Scott as a Sunday qualifier was Neale Griffin. Neale was a standby entrant who was granted a position in a section at Mudgeeraba. All three of his matches were tight victories, coming against Mohammed Fairus Abd Jabal 21-15, Jared Hamilton 21-20 and Jim Cornish 21-18.
Monday saw the last three South Perth representatives commence their singles campaigns.
Joe Galipo was beaten 10-21 by Rod Dixon and then 15-21 by David Bowles Paradise Point which meant his final match was of no consequence to the section result and so wasn't played.
Dandaragan and South Perth member Barrye Smith received a walkover in the morning session at Southport. He was then beaten by section winner Brian Baldwin 8-21 before overcoming William Bruce 21-14 in a strong showing.
Glenn Pauling was drawn at Robina and managed to repeat Greg Reagan's success at the same venue 48 hours earlier. In the morning game Glenn defeated Geoff Kirk 21-12 before wearing down Danny Phillips 21-15. By overcoming Alister Watson 21-14 in the afternoon, Glenn secured a spot in the knockout phase of the event.
South Perth will have four qualifiers enter the 256-man knockout continuation which commences next Monday. Congratulations go to Greg Reagan, Scott Walker, Neale Griffin & Glenn Pauling.
